President’s Report — March, 2018

PRESIDENT’S REPORT (MARCH, 2018)

Friends,

We kicked off the new year with a board retreat in February where we discussed some very ambitious goals for 2018.  But first I would like to welcome our new Vice President, Ryan Cox.  Ryan expressed interest in getting involved with FBSP and we are all excited about having him on the board.  We are still seeking a membership chair so if anyone would like to get on board please get a hold of me and we will talk.

Fundraising is FUN

Fundraising is the main vehicle for us to supply tools and equipment used during our volunteer pool cleaning efforts. There are three very important fundraising events happening that we are proud to be a part of.

  • Amplify Austin is our city’s annual community wide day of online giving that’s  happening on March 1-2.  To make a donation for Friends of Barton Springs Pool, click this link https://amplifyatx.ilivehereigivehere.org/friendsofbartonspringspool2018 and make donation!  Thanks!
  • Give5 Austin to Mother Earth is an event specifically dedicated to benefit 9 local nonprofit organization FBSP being one of them. A first part of the campaign involves finding business sponsors that will pledge to donate to 5% of their revenue on Fri(4/20) Mother Earth day.  If you business would like to participate as a sponsor, please click this link, https://austingive5.org/signup, and sign up!
  • FBSP Booth is our chance meet folks, and spread our message at the south side pool entrance.  We offer an assortment of products for a donation and plan on sponsoring the booth on the Sunday before each of our first Thursday of the month pool cleaning events.  We are working on a new design for our t-shirts and other products so please come by and listen, learn and contribute to our cause.

Ongoing Challenges for Friends

We have a multitude of challenges both inside and outside the fence at Barton Springs Pool. As an nonprofit organization our true calling is inside the fence sponsoring volunteer pool cleanings. We take the knowledge and experience gained from these events to raise awareness of issues, advocate for change and work with the BSP Staff to find solutions. This year we have challenges that include planting trees, repopulating plants in the pool, removal of sediment at the bypass tunnel inlet, keeping algae in the shallow end under control, eliminating non-native plants, and of course putting a shine on the pool railings and the diving well ducks. We are also giving support to many outside the fence activities that in part are integral to the goals of the Barton Springs Pool Master Plan. This involves the renovation of the bathhouse, a Zilker Park visitors center, and feasibility studies on how to improve pool water flow.  We are also in support of the HOT funding for historic preservation, the city bond initiative for purchasing aquifer land, and stopping our neighboring communities from dumping treated sewage into the aquifer. If you have a chance please add your name in support of these very important challenges to Barton Springs Pool.

We are all about finding ways to put big smiles and foster good feelings at the pool. The celebration of the completions of Eliza Springs Day Lighting project , the annual FBSP member picnic, and organizing Council Cleans the pool will hopefully keep everyone smiling and wanting to make the pool the best it can be this season.

See you at the pool,
Steve Barnick, FBSP President

2017 Spring Cleaning — Mark Your Calendar for Saturday, March 4

What say we schedule a little SPRING CLEANING?  Friends of Barton Springs Pool’s “Spring Cleaning” will be on Saturday, March 4, 2017, allowing volunteers to give back to Barton Springs Pool by helping spiff up the pool before the pool reopens.  So if you’re weary of winter and seeking spring solace in the cool and clear waters of our beloved Barton Springs, come help the Springs with some lovin, scrubbin, weedin’, mulchin’, aeratin’, whackin’, brushin’, gardenin’, and just getting down in the groovy cleaning vibe of the SPRING CLEAN to help clean up the pool before the swim season reopens!!!!!

Volunteers can choose from 4 two hour shifts, starting at 9am.  Please sign up for a shift at the SignUp link (http://signup.com/go/a4w8tV) to help spiff up the pool before the pool reopens.  We’ll have some yummy grub and refreshments, including delicioso tacos from our friends and supporters at Tacodeli!

Volunteer pool cleaning activities include push-brooming algae from the pool bottom, spreading mulch, landscaping and weeding work in the grounds, cleaning stair and sidewall rails, trimming and/or composting weeds and plants from the pool, painting bathroom facilities, planting around the pool grounds, repairing pool and grounds equipment, and generally lending a hand to make the pool and grounds as clean and beautiful as possible. There are lots of projects both in and out of the water, so please dress appropriately. This means long sleeves, pants and shirt, closed toed shoes and socks for grounds work. Wet clothes for working in the pool. Don’t forget your towel and sun protection! We like to think that we make the springs a better place for swimmers and the natural habitat that live there year round. So come on out and join us for the Friends of Barton Springs Pool spring cleaning extravaganza!!!

We are truly grateful for all the support from Austin Parks Foundation which makes our cleaning days possible, including generous grant support to buy tools and cleaning equipment. Next year, we hope to be a full partner with the IMPD experience, but for this year, we welcome any and all volunteers to our Friends of Barton Springs Pool day at Barton Springs!

Three Great Tips for Screening, Supporting, and Cleaning Barton Springs!!

We have three wonderful suggestions for our wonderful Friends of Barton Springs Pool for Screening, Supporting and Cleaning Barton Springs!

First, check out Living Springs’ debut screening of the “A Reflecting Pool” tomorrow (March 3 at 7 pm) at UT’s Belo Center for New Media Moody Auditorium. The film recounts the Springs’ experience from 1912 to 1962, including the little known race history of Barton Springs. The screening will also include extra screenings of “Mr. Habitat” and “Cleaning Day” which features the Barton Springs lifeguards and staff and community volunteers from the Friends of Barton Springs Pool. Addition screening event details are posted at https://www.facebook.com/events/635391156593046/.

Second, help Amplify Friends of Barton Springs Pool by making or scheduling a supporting donation at our Amplify Austin page, https://amplifyatx.ilivehereigivehere.org/FriendsOfBartonSpringsPool/overview. With a small $10 or $20 donation from each Friend, you can help restore, improve and maintain the pool through organizing, advocacy, volunteer work, education and fun.

Lastly, you can still grab a cleaning shift at our March 5 “It’s My Park Day” Spring Cleaning at Barton Springs. To register, go to the Austin Park’s Foundation’s sign-up page (https://austinparks.givepulse.com/…/16468-Barton-Springs-Po…) and when the page opens, click the “Register” link or button, enter the information for your t-shirt size, number of minors and liability form, register for your shift(s), and check the liability waiver.

We look forward to seeing you at the Springs!

March 5 Spring Cleaning at Barton Springs

Barton Springs! Spring Cleaning!! This Saturday!!! March 5!!!! Sign up at Austin Parks Foundation’s event page for a shift!!!!! YAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In order to fully and officially participate with the “It’s My Park Day” festivities provided by Austin Parks Foundation’s as a city-wide volunteer event, we are asking each volunteer to please register (or re-register, if you have already registered) by clicking here (https://austinparks.givepulse.com/event/16468-Barton-Springs-Pool-Spring-Cleaning) so that you can request a t-shirt and electronically sign the liability form.

We apologize for the extra step if you’ve already registered with our VolunteerSpot link, but we want to fully coordinate with It’s My Park Day since this is Austin Parks Foundation’s largest city-wide volunteer event with thousands of volunteers coming together on one day to work on hundreds of improvement projects in parks and greenbelts throughout the city. The volunteer labor on this single day represents an investment of over a quarter of a million dollars for Austin’s parks!

Thanks again for volunteering for this weekend’s workday and for helping Friends of Barton Springs Pool contribute to the largest It’s My Park Day event in history! Together we will not only improve our beloved Barton Springs, but parks across the city.

Thanks for your continued dedication to Barton Springs Pool!

Friends of Barton Springs Pool
