Next Pool Cleaning — June 30, 2016

UPDATE — Our next volunteer pool cleaning event is Thursday, June 30, from 9am til 3pm.  Barring unforeseen flooding, we will need lots of volunteers to help clean the Springs and tidy our beautiful pool and surrounding grounds, so please join us!  Sign up for a shift at our VolunteerSpot registration link, http://vols.pt/Y5jpVC.earthdaycleaningparty

At the June cleaning, volunteers can help spiff up Barton Springs Pool by brushing and vacuuming the pool bottom, cleaning stair rails and sidewalls, painting the south deck blocks, landscaping, gardening around the pool grounds, weeding the Great Lawn, and generally lending a hand to make the pool and grounds as clean and beautiful as possible. There are also lots of projects both in and out of the water, so please dress appropriately. This means long sleeves, pants and shirt, closed toed shoes and socks for grounds work. Wet clothes for muddy work in the pool. Don’t forget your towel and sun protection!

May 5 Pool Cleaning at Barton Springs!

Just a quick reminder that our next volunteer pool cleaning event is this Thursday, May 5, from 9am til noon.  As we work through our mild Austin spring season, Barton Springs needs your help to clean the Springs and tidy our beautiful pool and surrounding grounds, so please join us!  We expect a crew of volunteers from AMD to be on hand to help, and hope this will be a great opportunity for education and service in support of Barton Springs!  Eschewing the tradition of having folks sign up online for shifts, we’re asking folks to RSVP to our communications chair (communications@friendsofbartonspringspool.org) if you plan on joining us.  For our next cleaning, we’ll get the kinks worked out for our shift registration system.

Three Great Tips for Screening, Supporting, and Cleaning Barton Springs!!

We have three wonderful suggestions for our wonderful Friends of Barton Springs Pool for Screening, Supporting and Cleaning Barton Springs!

First, check out Living Springs’ debut screening of the “A Reflecting Pool” tomorrow (March 3 at 7 pm) at UT’s Belo Center for New Media Moody Auditorium. The film recounts the Springs’ experience from 1912 to 1962, including the little known race history of Barton Springs. The screening will also include extra screenings of “Mr. Habitat” and “Cleaning Day” which features the Barton Springs lifeguards and staff and community volunteers from the Friends of Barton Springs Pool. Addition screening event details are posted at https://www.facebook.com/events/635391156593046/.

Second, help Amplify Friends of Barton Springs Pool by making or scheduling a supporting donation at our Amplify Austin page, https://amplifyatx.ilivehereigivehere.org/FriendsOfBartonSpringsPool/overview. With a small $10 or $20 donation from each Friend, you can help restore, improve and maintain the pool through organizing, advocacy, volunteer work, education and fun.

Lastly, you can still grab a cleaning shift at our March 5 “It’s My Park Day” Spring Cleaning at Barton Springs. To register, go to the Austin Park’s Foundation’s sign-up page (https://austinparks.givepulse.com/…/16468-Barton-Springs-Po…) and when the page opens, click the “Register” link or button, enter the information for your t-shirt size, number of minors and liability form, register for your shift(s), and check the liability waiver.

We look forward to seeing you at the Springs!

Summer Springs Pool Cleaning — Thursday, September 3, 2015

You can volunteer by signing up for a 2 hour shift, starting at 10 am or 12:00 pm. Bring some friends. Food and refreshments will be supplied. A big thanks to our partner on this cleaning, Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co.! For those that sign up for a 10:00 – 12:00 pm shift, head over to ABGB for a slice of pizza!

Pool cleanings take place in two-hour increments from 10-12 and 12-2. We need three to ten volunteers for each shift along with experienced volunteers to serve as shift leaders.

At the seasonal monthly pool cleanings, FBSP volunteers scrub rocks, vacuum the pool bottom, clean algae off steps and railings, skim algae off the pool surface, plant flowers and help maintain the pool grounds, paint benches and trim, and generally lend a hand to make the pool and grounds as clean and beautiful as possible.

So come roll up your sleeves, bring a friend, have a snack and enjoy the company of other Barton Springs enthusiasts. We look look forward to seeing you there!
