On April 28, 2012, the third annual Barton Springs Pool Treeathlon was held as a goofy short and family-friendly swim/bike/run event to raise funds for Barton Springs Pool. Participants swam ACROSS Barton Springs Pool, biked a short loop through Zilker Park, and then ran a short course around the Polo Fields to the finish line party at the Polo Field picnic table area. Not an entirely serious athletic endeavor, the Treeathlon provided a fun way to celebrate Barton Springs Pool by bringing back some of the “Keep Austin Weird” vibe. Participants received cool tie-dye Treeathon t-shirts, and also enjoyed yummy Tacodeli tacos with Saint Arnold’s beer and Maine Root soft drinks.
Fundraising Results: Thanks to generous support from our great sponsors and from our Treeathletes, we raised over $6,000to support the restoration of the original rotunda entrance to the Bathhouse and other pool-related work of Friends of Barton Springs Pool.
We Thank Our Sponsors and Supporters:
First off, special thanks to Jon “Papa” Grant for his wonderful work in preparing the Treeathlon logo showing the salamanders in their action triathlete poses. Way cute!
We’ve also received tons of organizational help from Dan Carroll with High Five Events which we appreciate beyond words. Thanks so much!

On a beautiful Austin Spring day on April 30, 2011, the Second Annual Barton Springs Pool Treeathlon was held to celebrate and support Barton Springs Pool. By all accounts, the Treeathlon was truly a blast. We had a larger turnout of “treeathletes” this year with lots of families and young kids trying out their first triathlon-type event and really enjoying the opportunity to splash across the pool and trot around Zilker Park in this semi-silly fundraising event.
After a rousing a capella rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, Council Member Laura Morrison led eighty-plus participants in a short swim across the Pool and helped folks up the steps. Participants then hopped on their bicycles for quick loop around Zilker Park, and then ran around the Polo Field to the finish line party at the Moonlight Tower. Down the final run stretch, treeathletes were inspired by the enthusiastic drum and percussion music from Rhythmic Force. After this daunting athletic endeavor, participants enjoyed piles of donuts, root beer drinks from Maine Root, coffee from Caffé Medici, burritos from Freeb!rds World Burrito, and a keg or two of fine beer from Saint Arnold’s Brewing Company. The festive and fun finish line party was made possible by the generous donations from these fine local businesses, so please support them.
In addition to the day’s fun, the Treeathlon raised almost $15,000 for the Barton Springs Pool which will go toward improvements at Barton Springs Pool, including efforts to restore the original rotunda entrance to the Bathhouse and other pool-related work of Friends of Barton Springs Pool. The success of the event would not have been possible without the generous financial support from Save Barton Creek Association, our Grand Tree-ty Oak sponsor, as well as the generous support from Vinson & Elkins, Hamilton & Terrile, Sheridan and Perry Lorenz, Barton Place Condos, Meridian Solar, Silicon Labs, Abe Cutter, HDR Engineering, and many other generous sponsors. We are truly grateful for their support for Barton Springs Pool.
By official Proclamation from Mayor Lee Leffingwell, April 30, 2011 has been proclaimed the Second Annual Barton Springs Pool Treeathlon, “a fun triathlon-like event to celebrate Austin’s sacred playground, Barton Springs.” You can watch the City’s Treeathlon proclamation at the April 7, 2011 by clicking http://austintx.swagit.com/play/04072011-15/15/, and go to minute 18:45. The mayor has some nice things to say about Friends of Barton Springs Pool.
The 2015 Barton Springs Pool Treeathlon is a fun way to support Barton Springs Pool, Austin’s most famous and cherished swimming hole. As shown in the course map below, the Treeathlon will be a very, very short and fun event in and around Barton Springs Pool, starting with a short swim across the width of Barton Springs Pool (maybe 50 yards), a short bike ride around the park from the pool (about 2/3 mile), and then a run (1/4 to 1/2 mile) inside Zilker Park. There will also be a finish line party at the Polo Field Picnic area for anyone who manages to complete this grueling course. Hence, the name Barton Springs Pool Treeathlon Fun-raiser. (Insert groan here).

We are working to keep what was fun from last year, including the quick dip in Barton Springs Pool, the dash around Zilker Park, the kegs and Maine Root root beer refreshments, TacoDeli tacos, and the percussive sounds of Rhythmic Force. However, this year’s event will be especially fun for families with kids so we can introduce folks to the joys of Barton Springs Pool and give a little taste of triathlons.
Please join us in celebrating and supporting Barton Springs Pool with the Treeathlon, and if your business is interested in sponsoring this year’s Treeathlon, please contact Mike Cannatti at firstname.lastname@example.org.
