Hark, the herald angels sing!
It’s time for all to clean the Springs!
So join us on the Fourth of May…
to scrub the algae scum away!
On Thursday, May 4 (9am to 3pm), volunteers can help clean Barton Springs by helping yank invasives, brush and clean the stair rails and sidewalls, pot plants (it’s not what it sounds like), aerate and weed the lawn and gardens, spread mulch, excavate rocks, shovel sediment, and move the debris to the compost area by rolling wheelbarrows outside the pool area. All this hard work helps contribute to the cleaning, well-being, and beautification of Barton Springs Pool. TacoDeli tacos and refreshments will be provided, but bring your own attitude!!!
Volunteers can choose from 3 two hour shifts, starting at 9am. Please sign up for a shift at the SignUp link (http://signup.com/go/HxBnAms) to help spiff up the pool.
We are truly grateful for all the support from Austin Parks Foundation which makes our cleaning days possible, including generous grant support to buy tools and cleaning equipment. Muchas thankyous @austinparksfdn!
Mayor Steve Adler has issued a proclamation declaring Friday, April 21, 2017 as “Give 5 to Mother Earth Day” in Austin. In the proclamation, Mayor Adler applauds the commitment of the local businesses and nonprofits coming together on Give 5 Day in order to protect and preserve our Central Texas environment.
“In order to successfully protect our natural resources and our Earth as a whole, our entire community – including local political leaders, community leaders, and business owners – must work together,” Adler wrote. “I call on all Austinites to join me in thanking the participating businesses for generously donating a portion of their sales [in honor of] Earth Day, and I urge citizens to celebrate Earth Day by patronizing these businesses.”
Barton thanks you from the bottom of its Springs for all your help keeping the pool clean and in prime swimming condition! You can volunteer TODAY by coming down to help, starting at 9 am. Bring some friends and a scrubby attitude, and we’ll entertain you with the beautiful pool scenery, we’ll fortify your soul by getting your help to clean the Springs, and we’ll feed your tummy with yummy Tacodeli tacos. JOIN US!!!!
To (belatedly) open the 2017 season, Friends of Barton Springs Pool will have or first volunteer pool cleaning on Thursday, April 6, 2017, with 2-hour shifts starting at 9am. No, it didn’t really seem like winter was ever here, and now that Spring has sprung, it’s time for Friends to leap back into action (and into the pool!). Come the pool in its pristine and uncrowded state while also helping “give back” to Barton Springs. So here’s your personal invite to come take care of Barton Springs Pool, our beloved watering hole. Cleaning projects include push-brooming the pool bottom of the shallow end, scrubbing algae from the sides, rails, and stairs, and helping with landscape efforts to beautify the grounds, including weeding the lawn and gardens, turning the mulch, and generally lend a hand to make the pool and grounds as clean and beautiful as possible. So come roll up your sleeves, bring a friend, have a snack and enjoy the company of other Barton Springs enthusiasts. We look look forward to seeing you there!
Earth Day 2017 will take place on Friday, April 21st, and Friends of Barton Springs Pool (FBSP) is joining with other local environmental non-profits to harness the day for giving back to Mother Earth.
Together with local non-profits, Shoal Creek Conservancy, Hill Country Conservancy, Austin Parks Foundation, Sustainable Food Center, Waller Creek Conservancy, Pease Park Conservancy, TreeFolks, and Texas Campaign for the Environment Fund, FBSP is looking for local area businesses to take part in a campaign that will see 5% of their revenue from that day donated back to the non-profits.
These non-profits work tirelessly to ensure that the environment, which is a huge part of why Austin is Austin, and remains green, clean, and healthy! So for the eighth Give 5% year in a row, get ready to eat, shop, play and more on Friday, April 21st at participating businesses and make a personal and significant contribution towards a great cause.
If you would like to sign up your business to participate in the Give 5% campaign or find out more information, click here!
On March 2-3, 2017, Amplify Austin’s day of online giving begins, so please support one of the following groups: Barton Springs Conservancy, Hill Country Conservancy, and Save Our Springs Alliance. While Friends of Barton Springs is not participating in AmplifyATX this year, we recommend that you support any or all of these groups. Each is working in different but complementary ways to preserve and protect Barton Springs, and they deserve our support.
And if anyone wants to help one of our FBSP board members, please contribute to Mike Cannatti’s donation page (https://amplifyatx.ilivehereigivehere.org/CannattiCashForSplash2017) since he has promised, for any donation of $70 or more, to officially “go jump in the Springs” with a beautiful, beflowered rubber bathing cap (you have to see it to believe it) and send you a commemorative video in gratitude for your support.
